Katherine Howard Cuffs by VickitoriaEmbroidery Katherine Howard Cuffs by VickitoriaEmbroidery
Blackwork cuffs made as part of a Katherine Howard outfit. Stitched on lien with silk embroidery thread. Pleated onto a cuff band. All hand stitched.

I drew the pattern up myself. Is based on blackwork found in two different portraits - Jane Seymour by Holbein, and a portrait thought to be Katherine Howard. I have more info on my blog - [link]

I've wanted to do some Elizabethan black work and just need to find the time and the piece. When I do historical re-enactment, I tend to do early stuff like late Viking or early 12th century.

Absolutely lovely! I love the pattern, which is simple (well, decievingly so!) without being plain, and -very- well executed. My one and only try with silk on linen failed miserably, so I'm even more impressed!

Thank you :) Yes, I agree! That's what I love about blackwork, the patterns can often look really complicated once they are stitched up they look do look deceivingly simple. My first few bits of sample blackwork weren't that great, it was all very crooked and uneven, and just looked a mess. I now count all the threads in the linen fabric to ensure that my lines are straight. And with the silk thread I find working with a shorter length works much better. Stops it from unravelling and fraying so much. You should give it another try :) I love working with silk and much prefer it to the usual cross stitch cottons.

I'm still looking for a linen where thread-counting is accurate (e.g. all the threads the same thickness!), but I guess I will eventually.

And cotton's really hopeless. Synthetic is better, and silk to. I don't know if it's me or the thread, but it seems cotton spiral-twist-abilities are far larger than those of any other type of thread.

Ahhh it is so hard to find that perfect linen! I got sent some for a commission which was an absolute nightmare to use!! I dread my stash running out lol

Wow. That is real talent. I don't think I could do that... gimme a piece of fabric with built in holes, I'm good... but that's impressive. Very nice!

Thanks so much :) Yes, aida is soooo much easier and quicker to use than linen. Although once you have got the hang of the fabric it's not so bad :)
